GENERAL (STRESS MANAGEMENT AND INTERVENTION) PROGRAM

WHAT IS THE GENERAL PROGRAM?

A cost-neutral Program of 15 minutes weekly massage sessions for any staff member (participant) from any ward, department or clinic within any healthcare facility from 13 weeks minimum and up. A Program is introduced as a stress management tool (in line with health and wellbeing) and/or intervention in co-ordination with other proceedures (to bring some staff members in a high-risk vulnerable state centred back into their body).

HOW OUR SERVICE BENEFITS AND FITS IN WITH YOUR FACILITY

w

Consultation and staff engagement at every step

We tailor the Program with managers and staff for each ward, department or clinic around: mission and values of the facility; type of participants, shiftwork and time schedules, types of emergencies and when they tend to happen, length of packages needed, and the outcomes delivered by the Program that suit the facility and staff.

Understanding your facility’s culture is a basis behind how we tailor the Program to fit your individual circumstances.

We work with you to focusing on who and what needs it most

As the General Program works as a stress management tool and as an intervention, we help identify the most pressing issues and the best participants to receive a massage. We help take into account the issues thriving in your facility, the social strata in wards in determining those who will best lift the energy of their whole ward, for the benefit of co-workers, patients and others, and which ways massage can work to prevent an issue getting worse, or accelerate a solution.

Coordinate with your ward, clinic or department's timetables

We come in during break or lunch times, hand-over, double staffing and/or slow times, when 15 minutes off doesn’t cost the facility anything more. Each ward can be different, so we work with each ward on its own times. If times need to be moved, we present a set of times to change to. We make sure massage is accessible to everyone.

We work with the diversity of staff within your facility

Age, gender and roles have a part to play in shaping a session for individual participants, but we present no barriers to staff members who need and want massage. Some cultures have rules around touch, and some may not wish for massage based on gender preferences. Respect people’s culture will increase participation rates and make sure that each massage is more effective, targeting the right people.

Your staff need not remember their times, we remind them

15 minutes before each massage session, we send a text to each participant notifying of when and where their session is. We also remind them one minute before it is time.

We provide reliability and certainty by growing specific practitioners with a facility over the long term.

We strategically match the best practitioner(s) to any facility to work with that facility over the long-term. This provides more value for money, as the benefits of each session accrue, while the relationship between the participant and practitioner grows. This allows more to be accomplished, as trust and connection has grown.

We connect your staff to services your facility offers

Depending on the participant’s needs, we can recommend other services or benefits, such as gym memberships, wellbeing service (a Become Healthy at Work type program) or your EAP program. We can  incorporate parts of a massage session into internal programs.

We send out regular physical exercise reminders

Based on the sessions and their physical needs noted on their client file, participants can opt-in to get reminders about meditation, stretching, movement or exercise sent by text or email.

We collect and share our overall data results

The changes brought by massage have secondary effect on co-workers and patients around them. This gives your facility the leverage to take advantage of these changes and make improvements along with the massage sessions, through our easy-to-read infographics or full reports. Individual Physical Musculoskeletal Assessments are kept confidential.

HOW LONG IS THE GENERAL PROGRAM?

Each massage session is 15 minutes for staff members (‘participants’) of any position, gender and (mostly) condition within the facility. For a 52 week General Program (the longest), we will provide 208 massages to 4 participants over the course of one year.

WHERE WILL THE GENERAL PROGRAM BE HELD?

Each massage takes place in a room close to the wards or departments the participants work in. For instance, an unused room for chair massage (can be as small as 2m by 2m) and table massage (2.5m by 2m), conference space or even storage room. So long as our practitioners have space to move, they are flexible on where to work.

WHAT DO THE PRACTITIONERS BRING?

All equipment, music and oils/balms are brought in by the practitioner, with the facility providing the space.

HOW DO WE ADOPT THE GENERAL PROGRAM INTO OUR FACILITY?

If you have an EAP or Gym program, or a more overreaching program like a fitness or mindfullness program, we work side-by-side to complement to what already exists.

WHAT IS THE COST OF THE GENERAL PROGRAM and HOW DOES IT PAY FOR ITSELF?

Facility and # of Staff Groups of Participants # of Practitioners Calculation Total
Metropolitan Hospital of 1000 staff Approximately 150 1 to 3 35 hours @ $75/hr for 26 weeks $67,568
Regional Hospital of 250 staff Approximately 35 1 7 hours @ $70/hr for 52 weeks $15,766
[/su_table]

4 participants are massaged per hour (15 minutes each) with Groups rotated every 13 weeks. A flat hourly rate is applied for every hour of work, regardless of time during any day or week.

The Program pays for itself by reducing the direct cost of, as well as time, energy and resources spent in paperwork dealing with:
• sick leave
• high turnover and low recruitment
• medical errors
• potential acute and chronic injuries
• bullying and inter-personal issues (from co-workers, management, patients and their families)
• workers compensation, especially around mental health.

This offers a Return-On-Investment average of around 220%

WHY MASSAGE?

There is a long list of scientific studies proving the benefits and efficacy of massage in reducing stress and its resulting negative financial and personal outcomes for staff and their employers in all work environments, and for healthcare professionals in particular.

HOW IS THE GENERAL PROGRAM MANAGED?

HOW DO PEOPLE BOOK FOR THEIR SESSION?

With your help!

MFHPA will ask to include flyers on staff canteen tables or pidgeonholes, inclusions in newsletters and encouragements to view our Pilot Program page at home or on their phones.

We can also come in an give a brief talk to staff about the value of joining in.

We will also leave sign-on sheets at desks, which can be filled in.

Once this is done and the participants are in, we are willing to vary the Pilot depending on shift work or sudden changes to massage times during a crisis.

HOW YOUR STAFF FEEL

Chance for staff to emote and let go of stress verbally

Participants can speak freely in confidence in a neutral space during massage sesssion. As massage frees any stress-related energy stored in muscles, participants feel renewed.

Body-based destressing is a highly effective method

As first-line staff give through the day, but rarily receive back, a form of fatigue sets into the body. Massage connects the mind back to the body, and out of stresses friends (momentarily at least): anxiety and depression.

Connect back into empathy and better patient care

Connection to the body (and the love of the job) means the nursing staff will be smiling more and are more present in mind and body with the needs of the patients. This leads to greater patient care and safety, and patient satisfaction.

Help your staff see you and your facility in a new light

With regular weekly massage sessions (beyond one-day appreciation sessions), you raise your staff’s view of your care for them, which leads to better relationships between management and staff.
